A Massachusetts native, he attended Marietta College and pursued a career in the advertising industry working for agencies in New York before relocating to North Carolina.

Earlier, he was director of client services for Tribal DDB, New York, where he managed the Dannon yogurt, Pepsi, Abbott Laboratories and Principal Financial Group accounts. The database marketing methodology he created for the launch of Toyota's Lexus product line became the technology platform for "targeted marketing" in the 1990s.
