To position yourself as a leader in today’s business world you’ve got to first earn the respect and trust of those you hope to lead. One of the best ways to build credibility is also one of the easiest to accomplish – say what you’re going to do, and do what you say. Without consistent and reliable follow through, you and the brand you represent are essentially worthless. This is an especially crucial concept for those aiming to win the loyalty of today’s millennial workforce – many of whom are already strongly predisposed to feelings of skepticism and mistrust.

This basic concept is so important, we’ve made it the central theme of our business and personal mission statement for every employee. It means clearly and concisely communicating a specific plan of action – and then ensuring your actions match your words. When you do, you send a strong message to your clients, employees, even personal relationships that you are reliable and can be counted on. You demonstrate that you are a person of good character and have developed the personal discipline needed to get the job done. As the famous Zig Ziglar once said, ” It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”

There are literally thousands of entrepreneurs who had a brilliant idea or great product, but failed miserably because they could not grasp this simple theme. They could not consistently deliver on their promises. Their word and subsequently their brand became worthless. Have you ever given a business card to someone who had a product or service you were interested in, only to have them never call or follow up? Do you continue to chase them down or do you look for your answers elsewhere?

Providing great follow through – doing what we say and delivering what we promise – is the ultimate expression of personal accountability. By consistently putting our words into action, we realize greater results and reap more rewards. This in turn helps build self-confidence and creates an environment for further success. We build genuine relationships with our clients and customers. They become more loyal and refer more business – not just because of the great service or product we provide – but more because they have come to trust us.

Make this simple theme part of the foundation for your business: “Say what you’re doing to do, and do what you say.” Your company reputation is at stake and it’s simply too important to ignore.
