RALEIGH, North Carolina – Oct. 11, 2018 – To date, Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina and Coastal Credit Union have collected and safely destroyed more than 510,000 lbs. of sensitive documents and recycled over 135,000 lbs. of electronics from local residents, all in an effort to protect their identities. On Saturday, Oct. 27, the two organizations invite community members to a “Secure Your ID” Day event to further this mission.
The event runs 8 a.m. to noon, or until trucks are full, on Oct. 27 at the Coastal headquarters off Wake Forest Road in Raleigh (1000 St. Albans Drive). Coastal is a not-for-profit financial cooperative committed to providing its members the services they need affordably, conveniently and professionally.
“Studies show that identity theft occurs once every two seconds in the United States, and the majority of this is a result of information being stolen from someone’s own procession,” said Coastal spokesman Joe Mecca. “We’re continuing our great partnership with BBB serving Eastern North Carolina so we can provide our community this easy, bi-annual solution to help protect themselves. This is a completely free event for our members and the community.”
The complimentary document shredding, which allows up to three boxes/bags per person, is thanks to local partner Shred-It. GEEP will also be onsite collecting up to five electronics per person to securely destroy computers, cell phones and tablets, and recycle TVs, printers, fax machines, DVD/CD players, microwaves and toasters. The event is an easy drive-thru experience for attendees who stay in their cars while volunteers move the materials directly to shredding trucks, allowing them to watch as their sensitive belongings are destroyed or recycled.
“We’re proud to partner with Coastal Credit Union again to provide this free opportunity that can do so much to protect families,” said Mallory Wojciechowski, president and CEO of BBB serving Eastern North Carolina. “Take a few minutes to look around your home and collect sensitive information you no longer need for records, and then come see us on Oct. 27. It’s that simple!”
